Double Standard

Last week,I learnt about 'DIVERSITY' during Career Development and Management's 4th lecture.Diversity in organizational terms mean differences between working individuals such as gender, ethnicity, colour, sexuality, religion, disability, age, background, education, personality, work style and skills[Ellis and Dick,2002].It is basically everything, concerning variety and differences. Thus, this diversity should be understood and well managed to ensure that workers in particular become more productive and compatible to team members.Besides, the understanding of diversity is also crucial to avoid conflicts at workplace, including racism.

http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/pic/ARTPUB/42-17254892_24_36~Diversity-Posters.jpg

But,in reality, managing diversity is not that easy.According to research conducted Bradley[1984],sex bias are found in marking student's assignments!!And people respond favourably to men who are self promoting but the opposite is true for women [Wosinka et al,1996].Well,Carli[1999] suggests that women actually have a choice they can convey modesty and be more appealing but appear less competent.

and below...is something that is proposed by Dawson[1986] upon gender variety..Sabau ajela Cik Intan dan teman perempuan lain yang membacanya:

He's ambitious.
She's pushy.

He's having lunch with the boss,he must be doing well.
She's having lunch with the boss, they must be having an affair.

He gets on well with people at work.
She's always gossipping.

He's moving on-he must be a good worker.
She's moving on-women are so unreliable.

If men got married,it's an ability.
If women gets married, she's a liability.

Don't get me wrong.I'm not supporting gender equality, but I believe in gender equity instead. In this case,if you want to learn more about gender equity in Islam,do read Dr Jamal Badawi's work at http://www.jannah.org/genderequity/.

Indeed, diversity is the one true thing we all have in common. So,why not we celebrate it everyday together?

Cheers! :)

Still...Tak Percaya!

Erm,where and how should I start??I just came back from the NISE event in Leeds.I really had great fun with Soutunnisa' members in spite of the pressure in memorizing my part of rapping yang selalu tersasul.Siap terbawa-bawa ke mimpi lagi, aduiii!Maka, masuklah ia dalam kategori mimpi ngeri for me beberapa hari ini before NISE,haha!

Alhamdulillah,we manage to win the first place for this nasyid event. It was totally unexpected,as I assumed that yang paling cantek kitorang boleh dapat pun tempat ketiga considering other participants yang semuanya hebat-hebat belaka, especially Fathunnajeehah(Newcastle) dan Tukang Fiqir(Leeds).I adore them the most! They really rawks!

Basically we sang 2 songs:

1.We Will Not Go Down by Michael Heart;dengan menggunakan video dibawah untuk ditayangkan sempena persembahan[with some alteration,of course!].Credit to Tenuk for the help on the vid.

2.Standing In The Eyes Of The World;versi yang dinyanyikan oleh Too Phat,VE,Ruffedge,KRU,Shazzy,Phlowtror, dan Ella, again with some alteration untuk menjadikannya lebih tertib, sopan dan bermesej.

Standing In The Eyes Of The World - Too Phat, VE, Ruffedge, Kru, Shazzy & Phlowtron

Seriously,I still feel like tak percaya that our team won.Haha..

Tahniah dan terima kasih juga ditujukan buat komiti NISE as the event improves a LOT compared to last year, good job people! Wakiki~ :P

Last but not least,to Soutunnisa' team members,I truly enjoy practising and spending my time with you guys.

All praise belongs to Allah.NISE is an alternative platform for muslim women to show their talents in music and singing. As NISE 2009 director,Cik Ain Jailani has said, nasyid should serve the purpose of spreading Islamic values,to inculcate good moral values and habits and stress the importance of religion and allegiance to nation. Both the lyric and the melody of nasyid should not only entertain its listeners, but also bringing them to explore and examine themselves and their thoughts, and bring forth its purity.

Oh,by the way..sekali lagi ingin saya tegaskan disini.Except for Cik Irina yang mengiringi kami dengan keyboardnya dan Fatirul selaku wardrobe manager,we all sing ok..what I mean here is nyanyi sorang-sorang.

Teknik bajet-menakutkan-peserta-peserta lain:pakai jumper universiti

Antara komiti NISE 09.Great job peeps!

InshaAllah, seterusnya Sheffield Malaysian Student Association will be organizing Weekend In Sheffield comprising Sheffield Games on the 14th of March and Nashid Extravaganza 2009 on the 15th March. For further info,do visit their website at http://smsa.org.uk/.

To Love and To Be Loved In Return

Just came back from the historical city of Cambridge.A nice, quiet place,I would say.It may attract various types of tourist especially those who love architecture and tranquility-like me.Hehe...

Anyway,Zaffan and I went there not only for the sake of 'makan angin'.We went to Cambridge in order to visit Rashidah@Ede who's currently reading law in Cambridge University, and attend the talks organised by Cambridge Islamic Society. The talks basically focused on the mispresented issues of women in Islam and also talks about the Islamic perspective on relationships, romance and marriage[Ehem].The speaker is Shaykh Mohammad Akram Nadwi,a muhaddith specialising in 'ilmu rijal. He is from Jaipur,India and has received many ijazah including Shaykh Yusuf Al Qaradawi and Shaykh Abdul Fattah Abu Ghuddah. In conclusion, shaykh ni mantopps montoya punyela..

The first talk starts at 1pm in Keynes Hall of Kings College. In this talk,he differentiates between these 3 elements:'Desire,Like, and Love'.Desire,he explained; is part of human nature, and your desire will stop once it is fulfilled.Take example of desire to eat nasi kerabu (ku main rembat aje letak contoh ni,sebab dah lama tak makan nasik kerabu kelantan, ehe~).Balik Kelantan karang, once I consume nasi kerabu puas-puas,then my desire will stop nanti. If I eat more, then the marginal utility derived from eating nasi kerabu will still increase but at a decrease rate, and disutility will set in bila I sakit perut sebab makan tak ingat dunia.Hehe..So,marriage is not a about desiring to get a husband/wife and have a children, and then continue with your own world.A big no!If disutility sets in,tak pasal jadi naik benci, bercerai berai rumah tangga..

'Like',on the other hand is based on a rational thinking of human. You usually like a person because of his/her physical attractions and abilities. However,if you love a person,it should be more than the 'like' element.'Love' increase day by day, unlike 'desire' which stops after we have fulfill it.[what's worse is when disutility sets in,which leads to negative marginal utility/satisfaction].Therefore,it is not unusual for us to sacrifice our 'desire' for the sake of 'love'.If you truly love God wholeheartedly, you are willing to leave the sin that you have been committing in life, and you place your dunya in your hand, not in your heart,so that you will be able to control it.Like wise,if you love a person, you are willing to sacrifice your 'desire' yang kadang-kadang macam tak berpijak dibumi yang nyata (nak muka kiut cam penyanyi kumpulan Jepun Arashi, kuat macam Suparman, macho cam David Beckham, alim dan warak macam Ustaz/Ustazah tu,penyabar, baik hati, senyuman menawan...etc.OMG,boleh pengsan!).

How can our Prophet Muhammad SAW is loved by all muslims around the world although we have never seen him? This again explains the theory of love, which is based on certain qualities of a person, that are rooted deep inside him/her.It won't be based only on looks but will have a firmer base. That is 'Love'.

But how do you know when you have chosen the right person? How do you know that this is the one you want to spend the rest of your life with? How do you know that your marriage is going to succeed and not break down, like so many of the marriages around you? If your parents' marriage ended in divorce, what is to stop your marriage ending up the same way? And if your parents have been happily married for years, how can yours be like that? There's lots of questions, but important ones, isn't it?

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) gave some advice about choosing a wife:

A woman may be married for four things: for her wealth, for her noble descent, for her beauty or for her religion. Choose the one who is religious, lest your hands be rubbed with dust! (Al-Bukhari and Muslim).

A young man or a young woman, then, needs to choose very carefully who their life's partner is going to be. A future husband or wife will also be the father or the mother of your children. Your spouse will be the one in whom you confide everything, the one who looks after the family home or who provides food for the family table.

This syakh gave us some guidelines in searching for a spouse..He said, that there are 3 important criterias that we have to look after for a spouse-PATIENCE,FEAR GOD and COMPATIBILTY.A patient and god fearing person doesn't necessarily can be a good companion or a friend /partner whom you want to grow old with.I totally AGREE with you shaykh! This is when the 3rd factor i.e. COMPATIBILIY/SEKUFU/KESERASIAN play its role.It is crucial to ensure that we are comfortable with our partner regardless of other barriers such as status, traditions, culture and languages.Furthermore, hopefully the presence of our partner can bring serenity and peace of mind to us,rather than the other way round.Hurmmm, you do understand what I mean, right?

So,next step. How do you know you have chosen the right one? Well, it will feel right. If right from the start you don't feel comfortable with this person, then maybe this person is not the one for you. You might feel that, with time, you can see a bright future together.Saya bukan Dr. Sakit Cinta jauh sekali mempunyai kepakaran dalam bidang ini,but I would suggest you to look for signs from Allah SWT from various angles to find solution to the problem:instinct, family, friends, dreams etc.And before you want to take each steps of your decision, seek barakah from Allah SWT,The All Knowing God through du'a and prayers.

Do you have the same expectations from the marriage? Are you both looking forward to having children and to establishing a home together? These things need to be talked through, somehow, so that you both know what you are expecting. Take advice, too, from your parents and from close friends. Listen as well to wise Muslims in the community, who can speak to you at a distance removed from either family, telling you what Islam says about love and marriage.Consult people, but remember you are the one who will make the final decision, not your family, friends or other people around you.

It is most important, too, not to just jump at the first one who comes along! You are keen to be married, yes, but you have waited all this time, so wait just a bit longer so you can be sure. Do you want a marriage, or do you want a good marriage?Hehe... Do you just want a wife or a husband, or do want a wife or a husband you can delight in and be proud of?I'll take the latter ones. Remember that this person will be the father or the mother of your children. He or she will be the one you will care for, for the rest of your life. So just take a little bit more time. Pray a lot about it. Yes, pray again..and do istikhara.

You might be so keen to marry that prayer seems the last thing on your mind, but ask Almighty Allah to send the RIGHT PERSON into your life. And, when you have settled down together, continue to ask Allah to give you both the strength to love and support one another through good and bad times.Do believe in the power of du'a.

And so, when you are both old and grey, with grandchildren playing at your feet, you will be able to look back on a good marriage, a happy marriage, inshaAllah, and you will both be able to thank Allah that you did wait for the right one to come along! On that day, people will look at you and wish that they, too, could be blessed with such a happy marriage.

Wahhh, yang menulis ni pun rasa terharu sekali, hahaha~
Good luck yer abang, adik kakak sekalian...

Teori R.A.H.M.A.N.

As R denotes for Rahman ie Tunku Abdul Rahman.A for Abdul Razak,H for Hussein Onn,and M for Mahathir.Likewise, subsequent A for Abdullah Badawi dan hari ini...teori "RAHMAN" terbukti benar sekali lagi, dengan perlantikan Dato' Seri Mohd Najib bin Abdul Razak selaku Perdana Menteri Malaysia yang ke-6,yang mengisi ruang huruf yang terakhir, yakni huruf N.

How coincidence!

Quoting Abd Kadir Jasin:

Assalamualaikum people. I know we don't like reading long e-mails, but this letter from a LSE alumni in EGYPT is truly inspiring. enjoy..

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -

Hope you're all well insha'Allah, and that you're all fired up and ready for the week ahead, for both ISoc and Palsoc! Put in the effort and do as much as you can this week, because you have no idea how much of an impact it really has! Your genius of an occupation at LSE has had people over here talk about it!! Thats right - even people here in Egypt are praising it and they come up to me asking "weren't you at LSE?" To which i smugly reply "oh yes, indeed i was"!!!

Not only that but when i recently visited the main hospital in Cairo that is treating patients from Gaza, whenever I would tell them i was from the UK they would tell me how it brings joy to their hearts seeing their Muslim brothers and sisters in the UK demonstrating in such large numbers (who told you demonstrations didn't matter?), and how they're making dua for us as a result (how ironic that they are making dua for us and yet we sometimes forget to mention them in ours). There were many lessons to be learnt from them as they laid there injured and some even motionless. Their hearts and minds were truly inspirational, and i've been meaning to share my reflections on this for a while now - i guess now's as good a time as any to make sure you all GET OUT THERE, BE ACTIVE AND HELP ONE ANOTHER OUT THIS WEEK AS WELL AS DURING PALESTINE AWARENESS WEEK! (excuse me if this has already passed i'm really out of touch!)

The reflections on the hospital visit are below, split up into different sections, each one with a main message, and each one based on one of the truly amazing individuals who have given up so much for Islam.

The Dunya and the Akhira.

One of the patients i met was a mother, who in my view was the most inspirational one of all the patients i met. She told me of how she lost ALL of her 6 children during the bombing, a couple of whom because they were out fighting, and the rest of them, the really young children, died when their home was bombarded from high above. The mother was the only survivor. And as she lay there in the hospital with serious wounds and with everything that had happened to her, she was smiling the whole time, content that she's sacrificed more than any other person in the world for the sake of Allah, and indeed, who else can say that they've sacrificed everything for Allah, even their own children, and all of their children at that? Truly unbelievable. So she lay there content and happy despite the physical and emotional pain she was in, because she was so close to Allah, and so assured of Allah's Mercy that surely she was secured a place in Jannah for her sacrifices.

She's a truly remarkable individual but how many of us can think like her? How many of us are willing to sacrifice now in this temporary life for the sake of so much more in the hereafter? This woman sacrificed her children for the sake of Allah, and what have we done to deserve Jannah? What have we done for Palestine? And what have we done for the sake of Allah? How many times have we sacrificed something in this dunya for the sake of something in the akhira? Or have we been brain-washed and programmed to think only about instant gratification and never to think about disciplining our souls? How many times have we sacrificed large amounts of money for others? How many times have we sacrificed our sleep for worshipping Allah at night? How many times have we held ourselves back from the desire to do what is haram now for the sake of being patient and getting the reward later? How many times have we complained about things that happen in our lives while forgetting that this life is only temporary?

These questions are too reminiscent of so many verses in the Quran:

  • These are they who buy the life of this world for the hereafter, so their chastisement shall not be lightened nor shall they be helped. (2:86)
  • Beautified for mankind is love of the joys (that come) from women and offspring; and stored-up heaps of gold and silver, and horses branded (with their mark), and cattle and land. That is comfort of the life of the world. Allah! With Him is a more excellent abode. (3:14)
  • Every soul will taste of death. And ye will be paid on the Day of Resurrection only that which ye have fairly earned. Whoso is removed from the Fire and is made to enter paradise, he indeed is triumphant. The life of this world is but comfort of illusion. (3:185)

And the Quran is full of these verses!

But this woman reminded me of the bliss and joy that we can have from tasting eeman and faith in our hearts and being close to Allah. She reminded me of the importance of staying away from everything that is haram, and of doing everything that Allah made obligatory in Islam, as this is the best way to get closer to Allah. And she reminded me of the importance of reflecting about death and the akhira, and that we shouldn't go a day without reflecting about death or else we'll get consumed by this dunya, and forget to sacrifice for the sake of Allah. For that reason, i called this section 'The Dunya and the Akhira'!

Allah will bring them victory - with or without us!

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (saw) said:

"There will never cease to be a group from my Ummah fighting upon the truth until the last hour is established. They will not be harmed by those that oppose them or abandon them." (Bukhari)

Another one of the patients also spoke of how he had lost close ones but that this was normal for Palestinians. So I asked him what the mood was like in the streets of Gaza, how were their spirits? And what was their level of eeman given all the horrors being inflicted upon them? He answered smiling: "don't worry about them, they're all stronger than ever before, and their belief in Allah is deeper than ever before"!!!

I couldn't help but remember the hadith of the Prophet (saw) above, and how it really is a testament to his prophethood because these people, the Palestinian people, are exactly those people that are described in the hadith, fighting upon the truth for as long as it takes. And crucially, that they won't be harmed by those that oppose them nor by those who abandon them and betray them, as the Arabs did when they decided to hold an economic summit while their brothers, sisters, mothers and daughters were being massacred not more than an hour away! But the prophet (saw) says that this group of people will not be harmed by such betrayal because they're on the truth! In fact if anything the Quran speaks of how if these hypocrites were to join them and help them then they'll just hinder their progress, so they're better off without them!!

Allah says in Surah Al Taubah verse 47:

Had they gone forth with you, they would not have added to (your strength) except add corruption, and they would certainly have hurried about among you seeking (to sow) dissension among you, and among you there are those who hearken for their sake; and Allah knows the unjust.

And if the world wants to call them terrorists for defending themselves and fighting with honour instead of dying slowly in the prison that is Gaza today, then this doesn't affect them since they stand for the truth, and their light can't be extinguished, and Allah says in Surah Al Taubah verse 32:

They desire to put out the light of Allah with their mouths but Allah will not allow but that His light should be perfected, even though the Unbelievers may detest (it).

So i guess the lesson is that Allah will bring them victory with or without us (the title of this section!), so its up to us to decide whether we want Allah to count us amongst those who supported them with our actions, and our money, and our pens, and most importantly with our duas.

The Importance of Dua

You've all received (and read of course) the emails about the importance of dua, when to make dua and how to make dua, and i can't help but re-iterate this! Don't think that it's no use!! To think this is to give up on Allah, and this is the biggest crime we can commit - like EVER!! Allah says in surah Yusuf (verse 87):

and never give up hope of Allah's Soothing Mercy: truly no one despairs of Allah's Soothing Mercy, except those who are disbelievers. "

Another person i spoke to was a father who had lost 4 sons in the past 2 weeks (from when i spoke to him). And lying beside us was his last surviving son, his face completely burnt and the right side of his body completely paralysed. And the father told me to go back to the UK and tell everyone i knew, that we don't need your money, and we don't need your armies, we don't need anything, BUT the only thing we need is your duas. SUBHANALLAH! !! He's lost 4 sons, his final son is burnt and paralysed, and he believes WHOLEHEARTEDLY that what he needs is your dua and nothing else!!!

Now i can understand someone being stingy with his money (actually i can't) but to be stingy with your dua is just another level of disgustingness! !! Can we seriously not allocate even a minute of sincere and tearful dua after every prayer for our brothers and sisters in Palestine? And do we not make dua for them because we don't believe it will make any difference? Read the glorious verses of the Quran, and think again!!

Final comments....

Having spoken to these truly amazing individuals (and there were so many others i could have written about) I have realised just how important this group of people are to the ummah, they are the ones who are keeping the faith alive and they are the ones who have adorned themselves with Islam in their hearts and in their minds. We should allocate for them the highest status in our hearts and to make that a source of motivation and drive for us to live up to their standards, and to adorn ourselves also with Islam in our hearts and minds and actions. So I come back to my original message - DO AS MUCH AS YOU CAN THIS WEEK for the sake of Allah (swt) and to do so is to help the Palestinians directly and indirectly. And most importantly to you on the day of judgement, it is to help yourselves!!

We ask Allah to forgive us all for our sins and for our many shortcomings, and we ask Allah to nourish our hearts with the Quran and the Sunnah of Muhammad (saw), and we ask Allah to give us a taste of the beauty of worshipping Him and of thanking him for all the countless blessings that He has showered upon us

And if you would count Allah's favors, you will not be able to number them; most surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. (16:18)

I hope to see some of you again some time soon insha'Allah - thats if i make it back to the UK after the authorities see this email!! All the best with DIW and any PalSoc stuff - and help one another insha'Allah! !

Salam

Mustafa

Begitu juga dengan video ini.How can someone become so calm, walaupun dihina, dimaki, dicela gila talak, gila kuasa dan maruahnya diinjak-injak?I'm totally amazed and impressed!![Credit to anis ucop for the video]

Semalam, saya sempat membaca beberapa blog dan artikel lagi.(baca:banyak blog dan artikel.Perkataan 'beberapa' hanya untuk membuatkan diri tak bersalah sebab semalam banyak menghadap komputer dari menghadap buku pelajaran dan membuat kerja sekolah,ehe..).Sampai naik tepu juga otakni rasanya.Tertarik dengan ulasan Ustaz Hasrizal,Ustaz Zaharuddin Abd Rahman dan Ustaz Nasrddin Hassan At-Tantawi berkenaan kemelut politik di Perak.

Ustaz Nasrudin Tantawi:Lompat Spring

It's very informative,as I learned something new about Bahasa Istana.Haha..vocab Bahasa Melayu saya lebih kurang sama sahaja agaknya dengan editor mainstream media meskipun they cover the palace more often compared to me; especially during the awards giving ceremony .
