Midnight by Dawud Wharnsby - an untypical one!

once there was a girl i loved
but she did not know nor did she suspect..
i listened to her sing, speak and love each note and word
but she did not suspect..
i watched her when she sat, silent, simple
but never once do i believe she did suspect...
when by myself i thought of her, i painted and wrote poems for her..
its funny that, she never did suspect.

The poem is beautifully written isn't it??Though,I can't fully grasp its message when the guy in the video below said all these to his girl.

During the first half of the video,I didn't really like what I was watching. It's because the video looks as if it is just another pop video in Youtube, huhu.Yet,I watched the rest of the video, and it became much, much more interesting to me.I think, the whole point of this video is to believe in Allah, and be wise, patient and decisive when encountering any sort of problems or challenges. If you notice, the guy in the video represents Dawud when he was young, before he embraced Islam.Another great song by Dawud Wharnsby which you should have listened to..(at least, this is what I think).Sit back, relax, and enjoy yourselves!

Great lyrics too...as always :) Well done Brother Dawud!

He sat back in his arrogant sort of way.
He said, “There’s nothing more to say.”
then lectured on for another hour.

She said, everything was fine.
She said, she didn’t like to whine,
then cried on for another hour.

They sat there screaming through the room was silent.
They sat so still though the scene was violent.
And words can never really help you say,
what you want them to anyway.
And words can never really help you see,
what you really want to be.
He took a last sip of cold tea.

Last chance to stop all these lies.
Last chance to clean up these lives.
This could be the final hour.

This could be the final hour, or
this could be the finest hour.

And words can never really help you say
what you want them to anyway.
And words can never really help you see,
what you really want to be.
He took a last sip of cold tea.

Salam...

This post makes me smile, Nadia.

Actually, I have been thinking long about the content of this video and how I should think about it - only to conclude that this is a wonderful masterpiece and there are moving lessons behind it.

Below is my analysis about the video:

1. I think this is a story of Dawud himself, reminiscing his younger days.

2. The girl trying to wear a scarf - symbolizes her imagination of being a Muslimah. She finds it hard, though.

3. The girl trying to read the Quran - her effort to learn the Deen... though she may not agree to submit to it.

4. The guy reciting poetry - perhaps the girl that he recites the poetry to is the girl that she loves, but he never confesses... (If we put ourselves in Western context, despite the sweet time the guy and the girl spend together, not once they kissed - they may well be special friends, but not in a romantic relationship). Perhaps the girl also loves the guy but never confesses, too.

But what is obvious is that they are truly in love with each other as shown in the clip. Though some of us may find some of the expressions unsuitable for a Nasheed, I personally think this clip an honest presentation by Dawud during his early days of embracing the Deen and a great conflict he has to choose between his belief and the girl he loves.

Regardless, notice in the end of the video, the girl gave consent to the guy to uphold his belief by putting the scarf on his neck, even they must give up their romantic love.

Great lessons here that can be drawn from the video are, I believe:

1. Love is blind. At no occasions shall we be untrue to our feelings of love towards each other- as expressed by the girl and the guy.

2. However, when it comes to choose between love and Love, that is Love that should be given the higher priority.

3. And even if we disagree with the definition of 'Love', respect must be given to those who choose to follow the Path (as the girl showed).

And oh, Selamat Hari Raya, Maaf Zahir Batin!
